St. George’s University Alumni Association Campaign Contributes Directly to Reach Within Programs

Call to Action from SGU Alumni…

Grenada holds a special place in the hearts of many doctors who trained there. Whether one recalls azure blue waters, the soft breeze carrying scent of nutmeg and hyacinth, or the open arms of a nation, one thing is certain: heaven on earth helped us prepare for our careers. Grenada gave to us; let’s give back to its most vulnerable as they are challenged by the aftermath of the crisis of COVID-19.

The number of children who need care is exponentially increasing as a result of the pandemic as wages have been lost, the tourism industry is waning, domestic violence is on the rise  and children are caught in the crossfire. With residential care homes at full capacity, Reach Within has been called upon to provide increased crisis intervention services. A former SGU Alumni and now psychiatric fellow, has also collaborated with Reach Within to create a Mobile Crisis Team to ensure adequate mental health services for children in crisis. As a recent recipient of the Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action, Reach Within is building the first Child Developmental Centre in the Caribbean Region. This will allow Reach Within to scale-up their model of care; engaging regional universities, researchers, organizations and government agencies in the prevention and treatment of child abuse. The setting also provides a serene retreat space where children and teens will be able to attend weeklong therapeutic camps. It will also serve as a site for crisis counseling during transition, such as from an at-risk biological home to a residential care home or from one residential care home to another.

Right now, we have an opportunity to come together as medical professionals to support community well-being. Through a sustainable partnership with St. George's University and Reach Within, we are meeting the immediate needs of children and teens made more vulnerable by Covid-19. In life, it is said that things often come full circle. So here we are, asking for you to invest in the longterm well-being of a community that gave you your own start in healing . #SGUgivingback
